The Parenthetical Review is seeking works of fiction and creative non-fiction for its forthcoming online edition. Submissions should be approximately 5,000 words. Humor, speculative fiction, research-based non-fiction and immersion journalism will all be considered. The deadline for submissions is 15 May. PALAVER PRESS is launching two themed audio-literature podcasts in the Spring of 2014, and we're on the hunt for amazing works of short fiction, music and sound from today's most exciting independent authors and artists!

Each 90-minute podcast will feature several narrated short-stories, seamlessly woven together with music, exploring concepts derived from music and compositional theory.

This is an open call for SHORT FICTION (in audio format), SONGS and SOUND WORKS responding or relevant to a specific theme, either in content or structure. We are only accepting full works of recorded audio at this time. We are not accepting poetry, non-fiction, radio drama or excerpts of longer pieces.

The two themes for this Open Call are: PIANO & DA CAPO

1) PIANO - either involving the piano as an instrument, or making use of the Italian compositional term piano, which means "played softly".
2) DA CAPO (Repetition) - this Italian compositional term signifies the repetition or revisiting of a phrase or movement.

FICTION STORIES submitted will be between 5 - 20 minutes in duration.
MUSIC/SOUND WORKS submitted will be between 3 - 10 minutes in duration.

Deadline : Monday, February 17, 2014 (11:59pm EST)
Cost : $3 (USD)

Criteria / Eligibility
-Applicant must hold either the rights, or permission of use of submitted pieces, and by submitting to this podcast, the applicant is granting Palaver Press permission to include this material in our broadcast/podcast.
-Literary submissions can be narrated by anyone, including the author, but must be narrated in English.
-All pieces must have been written and recorded within the last five years.
-An applicant may submit up to two works in either format.
-Acceptable audio formats include mp3, m4a, m4b or AAC. Please do not send WAV or AIFF.
-All genres of fiction are acceptable.

Terms
Palaver Press will notify all applicants of their status on or by Monday, March 10, 2014 via e-mail. By submitting, applicants are allowing Palaver Press to add their e-mail address to the company's mailing list. Applicants may "unsubscribe" upon receipt of their acceptance status by following the links at the bottom of the e-mail. We are only accepting submissions online.

Call for Submissions: short works of fiction and non-fiction

Not Your Eyes is a publishing house established in 2013. Content is mainly published online but will also find its way into annual, biannual or quarterly print anthologies, depending on how much time, money, and energy are available.

We publish short works of fiction and non-fiction which let you escape your daily routine. There are no particular submission criteria for fiction. For non-fiction, a strong personal dimension in the prose is important. The reader must be given the chance to see the world through the eyes of the author.

Submissions need to be in English but do not need to be unpublished. However, please respect any exclusivity arrangements you might be engaged in.

Not Your Eyes is non-profit and any money that might (miraculously) be made through the sale of print anthologies will contribute to the production of subsequent issues.

When it comes to format, anything goes. We welcome old-fashioned structures such as the essay or the short story. But we also feel very positive about anything that challenges conventions, such as maybe a collection of Twitter or Facebook posts, or a WhatsApp conversation.

Unwanted poetry is a public safety issue, leading to accidental poisoning, overdose and abuse.

Academic poetry can be just as deadly as street poetry when read without supervision.

The use of poetry ranks second only to marijuana as the most common cause of death amongst members of Generation X in America.

The majority of teenagers abusing poetry get their poems from family and friends. Studies show that readily accessible books in homes are at least 73 times more deadly than loaded firearms.

Unwanted poems thrown in the trash can be retrieved and abused or illegally sold. Unwanted poems that are flushed contaminate the water supply. Proper disposal of unwanted poetry saves lives and protects the environment.

Here are some tips for properly disposing of unwanted poetry and poets:
Tear poems out of books; Mix poems with something more appealing like used kitty litter or soiled diapers; Seal poets in a bag or disposable container, and throw them away.

Word Riot Inc. | Paula Anderson Book Award – Kicking small press into high gear.

The Paula Anderson Book Award will be granted to the author of a work of literary fiction, either a novel or short story collection, that was published by a small or independent press in 2011. The award will honor a writer whose work embodies the bold spirit of Paula Anderson, the late co-founder of Word Riot Press. The title should have increased awareness of or otherwise drawn attention to the small press community because of the merit of the work.

An author, editor or publisher may nominate a title. Nominations will be accepted through our Submishmash submissions manager account. A PDF of the title must be accompanied by a $25 processing fee.

Self-published works will not be considered. Word Riot Press titles are ineligible for the Paula Anderson Book Award.

The book must have been published between Jan. 1, 2011 and Dec. 31, 2011

Nominations will be accepted from Aug. 1, 2011 to June 1, 2012. The results of the 2012 Paula Anderson Book Award will be announced Aug. 1, 2012 and the winning author will receive $1,000.
