THIS IS POETRY
The Literary Underground is pleased to announce a new project called "This is Poetry". The project will ultimately result in an eight-volume collection of poetry, each volume representing poets from a specific geographic region as well as several special collections. These perfect-bound books will be published under Citizens for Decent Literature Press, founded as part of The Literary Underground. Co-edited by Michele McDannold and Brian W. Fugett, we are currently working on the first two volumes: Women of the Small Press and the American Midwest.

Poems selected for this project will first be published online via tumblr blog - http://thisispoetry.tumblr.com/ - a bit of a social media experiment with poetry. Wouldn't it be great if poetry went viral? We think so.

Submissions are taken by invitation only and based on referral from poets participating in the project. This is how the project is taking on an organic life of its own. It's not just the eds hitting up their favorite poets. It's the eds hitting up their favorite poets, their favorite poets tossing in their favorite poets and so on etc into awesomeness.

Another important and exciting aspect of this project is that we are encouraging contributors to send in their best, most defining work including and emphasizing on previously published poems. It is our intent to highlight other small press publishers, noting the publication credit with a link to the online presence of the small press publisher with each poem published on the tumblr as well as a links page including the same, gathered for easier reference.

Artists in residence at the Collingwood Arts Center in Toledo, Ohio are being evicted--given thirty days notice--in the dead of winter. This is not just some art space. This is their home, an affordable place to live and be able to make their art.

I have been to Collingwood several times. The first, was for the Zygote in my Fez reading back in August 2011. It was the first event I ever helped put together or even go to in the small press... an amazing experience that was made possible with the help of current arts resident, poet, and dear friend Michael Grover.

That event brought many people together that had worked with each other for years in independent publishing, but never actually met in person. Mix of poets converges to share works at area festival. Arts center event showcases creativity and collaboration. (Toledo Blade). It inspired some great writing, a book, and many more collaborations. What the fuck is wrong with our society that we can throw away money on useless bullshit and turn the other direction when something like this happens? What does this say about what we value? It's shameful. downright disgusting.

I don't know what, if anything can be done. I'm looking for someone to complain to, and I just hope that you will be aware, make other people aware, and do SOMETHING, anything to put a stop to this horseshit, show your support, refuse to sit by idly.

When you make the arts, creativity... your life... yeah, maybe you're gonna suffer for it. bleed for the page and all that. Does it really have to be this miserable though? It shouldn't.

Dear Human,
There wasn’t a doubt: there would be an Uno Kudo Vol. 2. The first book was a best seller on the anthology list and raised a nice amount of money for a worthy charity. But following the first book, a strange thing happened. The writers and artists who were included began to talk. They picked up telephones and said, “Oh hi, hello—so strange that we’ve never hung out before.” They bounced emails back and forth—“Wanna help me drink this vat of Pinot Noir?” Parties sprung up. Snail mail popped into mailboxes: birthday cards, odd little handwritten notes. These people had all fallen in love with each other. They started talking. Collaborating. Plotting. Devising. They took vacations together. It was baffling. This kinda' thing wasn’t supposed to happen anymore.

An art collective. A modern day art collective.
Really?

Yup. It spans the U.S.A. and it’s spreading … inching out daily. Like the Blob … Seattle, Los Angeles, San Diego, Portland, Boulder, Brooklyn, Upstate New York, Chicago … that Johnny Cash song, I’ve been everywhere man … Sure! Sea to shining sea. Europe too. Pins on the map in Japan, South America, anywhere there’s a somebody leaving a light on. We’d like to come to your town—absorb you just like the Blob did. We’re friendly though. We’ll slather you in neon DayGlo paint and ... well, lots of things will happen.

There’s a place for you here in Uno Kudo. Read. Look. Write. Create. Speak. Buy me a drink. I’ll buy you a drink. We’ll get naked and things will glow with an impossible hum—reverberating with a tinge of welcome danger.

Michele was the Editor-in-Chief at Red Fez Publications from 2007 to early 2012. She is currently the Director of Print and Special Projects at Red Fez. Midwest Small Press Festival

Greetings!
We are writing as a group of Milwaukee-based independent literary presses including Rescue Press, New American Press, Plumberries Press, Burdock Magazine and others. Currently, we are curating what we hope to be the 1st annual Midwest Small Press Festival, over the weekend of June 1st-3rd. Due in part to your own investment in independent lit, we would like to reach out and invite you to join us.

The weekend-long event will take place in Milwaukee’s Riverwest neighborhood, a cozy little spot full of artists and doers with a cooperative fervor. We’re including some addresses in this note in case you might want to take a look at the layout of the festival.

The festival will center around a book-fair at the Polish Falcon (801 e. clarke st.) on Saturday June 2nd where small presses from throughout the region will have their wares on display and for sale. With presses coming from Chicago, Minneapolis, Michigan and Ohio, as well as from other parts of Wisconsin, (some names of specific mention: Switchback, DoubleCross, Horseless, Xexoxial, etc.) the event will present an impressive introduction to the independent literary presence in the Midwest.

Ancillary events throughout the weekend include an opening reception at Woodland Pattern Book Center (720 e. locust st.) and multimedia word based performances at The Nut Factory (3750 n. fratney) on Friday June 1st as well as workshops and readings at the Cream City Collectives (732 e. clarke st.) throughout the day on Saturday the 2nd and a brunch spelling-bee and literary trivia game at the Riverwest Public House (815 e. locust st.) on Sunday June 3rd as well as live music, gallery showings and more.

Table space is cheap at $15 for half a table, $25 for a full table.

Dear friends,

The spectre of the Occupy Wall Street movement and its otherworldly implications certainly warrant a special issue of dispatch litareview (issn 1948-1217 - litareview.com), that much goes without saying. Given our historical grounding as a forum for radical literature, it'd be irresponsible of us to forgo this movement as cause for a special edition.

We feel that this issue must be printed and disseminated on the streets as well as by the usual means (free download). We've got the people nationwide to make this happen. We're only short a bit of spare change, and so we've done one of those kickstarter things to see what can come of it. If we get anywhere near the goal, surely we'll find another means to cover the gap ("...we robbed banks to fund papers of transgressive poetry..."). California Small-Press Publisher Len Fulton Passes Away at 77 : Harriet Staff : Harriet the Blog : The Poetry Foundation.

We are sad to note the passing of a lovely person and key player in the small-press world, Len Fulton, the force behind Dustbooks Publishing and Small Press Review, who died of lung cancer last Sunday morning. Len, who was 77, also worked in California politics, acting as a Fifth District Supervisor in Chico. According to a longtime friend, he was “an artist, talented writer and playwright who had an interest in politics.”

Remembrances abound in the Paradise Post. One of the most striking is from friend and writer Hugh Fox, who writes about Fulton in detail:

Like saying goodbye to Debussy or Hemingway or H.G. Wells. I…first met Fulton in Berkeley in 1968 when we founded COSMEP, a small press org. that had yearly conventions here, there and everywhere: St. Paul, Minnesota, New Orleans, New York, you name it. And everyone would be there, all the editors of small presses and lit mags. And poets and other writers. Always reading-shows, and I’d always read.

I got to know EVERYONE in the literary scene. And visited Fulton up in his place in Paradise, California, way in the middle of nowhere, or everywhere, if what you loved was California wilderness.

Tall dark-haired, a little moustache, always bright, on the ball, kind of Harvard professorish, but at the same time a kind of exploratory cowboy explorer always moving further into the essence of Nature itself. For years, two or three times a year I’d get a huge envelope filled with books and literary reviews to review for SMALL PRESS REVIEW, and he slowly turned me into a kind of central writer for the mag. Which I loved. Sadly COSMEP slowly disappeared over the years. Run by Richard Morris in San Francisco, it’s a book in itself that would go through the slow decapitations of all our dreams and hopes. But Morris died from cancer and COSMEP kind of died with him. There’s a huge file over in Special Collections at the Michigan State University library dealing with my connections with the death of COSMEP.

A couple of years back Fulton turned SPR into an on-line mag, which I wasn’t crazy about. But he’d always send me a printed copy too, and I’ve got this huge file in my bookcases, years and years and years of copies with my reviews in them.

In the last few years he became increasingly solitary. Suffering from lung cancer, but not aware that was what was going on. When I recently told him that I’m dying from cancer, he wrote a beautiful letter back and mentioned he wasn’t “quite up to it” either. But I don’t think he was aware it was lung cancer.

He was/is a central figure in the development of literary culture in the U.S. He published an INTERNATIONAL DIRECTORY OF LITTLE MAGAZINES AND SMALL PRESSES which I always found of central importance in finding publishers for my books and articles. An odd name for a press — Dustbooks. Always aware of the transience of life and everything surrounding him/us. Always Señor High Concentration, High Seriousness. I couldn’t believe the size of the library in his Paradise ranchhouse. I asked him “Any of my stuff here?,” and he walked over the showed me volume after volume after volume, almost everything I’d ever written, the whole library a veritable treasure house of literary treasures.
